Many pollinators need specific habitats and specific conditions within that habitat. A prime example is the Large Blue butterfly which pupates in the ant nest of only one species of ant in the UK. Even within the nest, specific conditions are required, such as the number of ants in the nest.

It is therefore, good to see that Defra are creating an in-depth strategy to protect pollinators. Additionally, the strategy does not just focus on crop pollinators, but also on those that pollinate wild flowers too.

Safeguarding pollinators will in turn have positive effects on other species. For example, butterflies pollinating wild flowers will create habitats rich in macro-invertebrates for birds and small mammals.
