I'm glad to see action has been taken against hedgehog hunters in Europe. With all the threats hedgehogs have to face such as loss of habitat, pesticides and roads, we should ensure that the declining population is protected as much as possible. Currently in the UK the hedgehog is partially protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, meaning that they may not be killed or taken by certain methods. However, given the state of the decline in the UK, surely they should be granted full protection under schedule 5 of the act.
France's animal protection society says it has filed a lawsuit against three men arrested last month in a northwestern Paris suburb for illegally hunting hedgehogs to eat. Tamara Guelton of the Animal Protection Society says they were contacted by police after the arrest of several men in a Cergy-Pontoise forest mid-August, after they collected hedgehogs in plastic bags to cook.
